Jesus Is at the Right Hand of God
1 Peter 3:22 “Who is on the right hand of God, having gone into heaven; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.”
According to this testimony of Peter, Jesus is the One who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God. The reason this is important is that David, long ago, prophesied concerning the Lord who would come afterward, that is, the Christ, and spoke as follows:
Psalm 110:1 “Jehovah saith unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, Until I make thine enemies thy footstool.”
To the Jews, this was a difficult word to understand. This is because, to them, it was unclear who another Lord could be besides “the Lord Jehovah,” and through this word they could only vaguely know that the Christ, the Messiah who would come afterward, would sit at the right hand of God. Therefore, we can see that even the Pharisees could not properly answer the following question of Jesus.
Matthew 22:41-46 “41Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42saying, What think ye of the Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The son of David. 43He saith unto them, How then doth David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying, 44The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Till I put thine enemies underneath thy feet? 45If David then calleth him Lord, how is he his son? 46And no one was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.”
Also, through the Epistle to the Hebrews, which was sent to the Hebrews, the writer of Hebrews asked the Jews the following question:
Hebrews 1:13 “But of which of the angels hath he said at any time, Sit thou on my right hand, Till I make thine enemies the footstool of thy feet?”
The Jews in the days of Jesus regarded Jesus’ following answer as a charge by which to put Him to death.
Luke 22:66-71 “66And as soon as it was day, the assembly of the elders of the people was gathered together, both chief priests and scribes; and they led him away into their council, saying, 67If thou art the Christ, tell us. But he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: 68and if I ask you, ye will not answer. 69But from henceforth shall the Son of man be seated at the right hand of the power of God. 70And they all said, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am. 71And they said, What further need have we of witness? for we ourselves have heard from his own mouth.”
Thus, when the Spirit of truth came down to this earth, He made known clearly, through the disciples of Jesus and in the tongues of many nations, the meaning of David’s Psalm to the Jews who did not properly understand it.
Acts 2:34-36 “34For David ascended not into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, 35Sit thou on my right hand, Till I make thine enemies the footstool of thy feet. 36Let all the house of Israel therefore know assuredly, that God hath made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom ye crucified.”
Nevertheless, when Stephen testified of this, they stopped their ears, rushed upon him, and even stoned him to death.
Acts 7:55-58 “55But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, 56and said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. 57But they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord; 58and they cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.”
But what is amazing is that Saul, who was present when Stephen was killed, later testified the very same thing as Stephen: that Jesus is at the right hand of God.
Romans 8:33-34 “33Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth; 34who is he that condemneth? It is Christ Jesus that died, yea rather, that was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.”
Amen. Yes, this is the truth. Therefore, all who come to know this truth cannot help but confess the same truth (1 Cor. 1:10). Truly, Jesus, as Lord and Christ, has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, just as David testified. Through Hebrews also, this same testimony is emphasized and made known several times.
Hebrews 1:1-3 “1God, having of old time spoken unto the fathers in the prophets by divers portions and in divers manners, 2hath at the end of these days spoken unto us in his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the worlds; 3who being the effulgence of his glory, and the very image of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had made purification of sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.”
Hebrews 8:1-2 “1Now in the things which we are saying the chief point is this: We have such a high priest, who sat down on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, 2a minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, not man.”
Hebrews 10:12-13 “12but he, when he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; 13henceforth expecting till his enemies be made the footstool of his feet.”
Hebrews 12:2 “Looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising shame, and hath sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Therefore, today we also must know, believe, and testify that Jesus is the “Lord” and “Christ” of whom David spoke. We must also believe that Jesus, who went up into heaven for us and is seated at the right hand of God, will come again for us at the appointed time, just as He promised (John 14:1-3, 1 Thess. 4:16-17). Jesus has already sent the Spirit of truth to this earth, just as He promised (John 16:7). Therefore, we who have been baptized in the name of Jesus and have become people of the Spirit (Acts 2:38, Col. 2:12) ought to seek the things that are above, not the things that are on the earth, and live with our minds set on the things that are above.
Colossians 3:1-2 “1If then ye were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God. 2Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are upon the earth.”
Amen.
