Jesus Is Alpha and Omega
Revelation 1:8 “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”
Alpha (α) and Omega (Ω) are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. In other words, Jesus revealed to people, through human letters, that He is the beginning and the end. As the passage above says, Jesus existed from the beginning, exists now, is the One who is to come, and is Almighty God.
The evidence that Jesus existed from the beginning is recorded from Genesis 1.
Genesis 1 “1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 3And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 6And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. 9And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. 11And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind... and it was so. 14And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night... 20And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth... 24And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind... and it was so. 26And God said, Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness...”
In this way, God created the heavens and the earth “by the Word” in the beginning. Later, the apostle John testified as follows concerning who Jesus is:
John 1:1-3, 14 “1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2The same was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. 14And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
According to this testimony, Jesus is God, the Word of God made flesh, and therefore He is the One who created the heavens and the earth in the beginning. That is why Jesus can be “Alpha,” that is, “the beginning.” In fact, because Jesus is God, He surely existed even before the beginning recorded in Genesis 1, when this world was created. The testimony concerning this is recorded in Proverbs, the book of wisdom.
Proverbs 8:22-32 “22The LORD possessed me in the beginning of His way, before His works of old. 23I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. 24When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. 25Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: 26While as yet He had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. 27When He prepared the heavens, I was there: when He set a compass upon the face of the depth: 28When He established the clouds above: when He strengthened the fountains of the deep: 29When He gave to the sea His decree, that the waters should not pass His commandment: when He appointed the foundations of the earth: 30Then I was by Him, as one brought up with Him: and I was daily His delight, rejoicing always before Him; 31Rejoicing in the habitable part of His earth; and My delights were with the sons of men. 32Now therefore hearken unto Me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep My ways.”
As this passage teaches, Jesus is the Creator, God Himself, who was with God before this world was made (Isaiah 41:4). Therefore, it is truly fitting that Jesus is the first beginning of all things.
And now this world will come to its end by that same Word.
2 Peter 3:7 “But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.”
As Peter wrote, in the end, the present heavens and earth will eventually be judged “by the Word” because of people’s sins. Jesus Himself also said the following:
John 12:48-50 “48He that rejecteth Me, and receiveth not My words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. 49For I have not spoken of Myself; but the Father which sent Me, He gave Me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. 50And I know that His commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto Me, so I speak.”
Because Jesus is the Word of God Himself, it is only natural that He cannot speak of His own will apart from the Word of God. He also told His disciples that the Holy Ghost would not speak of Himself (John 16:13). Therefore, just as Jesus said, the Word of God will judge those who reject the words of Jesus in the last day, and those who hear the words of Jesus, that is, the Word of God, will receive eternal life in the last day. This is because the words of Jesus are eternal life. Therefore, we who live in the last days must all the more hear the words of Jesus and receive faith and life.
Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
John 5:24-25 “24Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 25Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.”
Now, the only way for us to be born again in this sinful world is the Word of God alone.
John 3:1-5 “1There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto Him, Rabbi, we know that Thou art a Teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that Thou doest, except God be with Him. 3Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4Nicodemus saith unto Him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? 5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”
Just as this world was created by the Word of God, we also need the Word of God in order to be born again, that is, to become new creatures (2 Corinthians 5:17). Jesus told Nicodemus that unless a man is born “of water and of the Spirit,” he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Later, Jesus told His disciples that the Holy Ghost also does not speak of Himself (John 16:13). Therefore, we can understand that being born again of water and of the Spirit means the same thing as being born again by the words of Jesus. That is why Peter later declared that we have been born again by the incorruptible Word of God.
1 Peter 1:23-25 “23Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God, which liveth and abideth forever. 24For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: 25But the word of the Lord endureth forever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.”
As we have already seen, Jesus is the Word of God. Because Jesus is the One who came as the Word of God made flesh, we can be born again only by the words of Jesus. Therefore, we must now cast away our own theories and thoughts (2 Corinthians 10:5) and listen only to the voice of Jesus. Since only the words of Jesus are our life, truly only those who hear the words of Jesus will escape judgment in the last day and receive eternal life.
John 20:30-31 “30And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book: 31But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through His name.”
Colossians 3:17 “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him.”
Now, when the end of this world comes, the Word of God will judge this world, and only the Word of God will remain forever. Therefore, the statement that Jesus, who is the Word, is “Omega,” that is, “the end,” is true.
Revelation 22:13, 20 “13I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. 20He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”
Amen.
