The New Piece Does Not Agree with the Old
Luke 5:36 “And He spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.”
Together with the words, “new wine must be put into new bottles” (Luke 5:38), this passage teaches us that the “old” and the “new” must be clearly distinguished from one another. If we have been born again by the words of Jesus (John 3:1-5), then our “old man” has been put off, and we have been made new as a “new man.” The apostle Paul called such a person “a new creature.”
Ephesians 4:22-24 “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Therefore, for the “new man” who has now been born again by the words of Jesus, the former “old man” must no longer remain in us. This is because the old and the new must be clearly distinguished. Just as Jesus said, “the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old,” I earnestly pray to Jesus, in the name of Jesus, that in this new year we may live only as new people who follow the words of Jesus.
